About this course

​Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application

 

Based primarily on Materials and Components, it is a 2-hour, externally assessed written exam with 3 sections.

Section 1 contains compulsory limited-response questions. Section 2 offers a choice of one question from two. Section 3 contains one compulsory question.

This unit is 50% of the AS and 25% of the A Level.

Unit 2: Learning Through Designing and Making

​About 50 hours of internal coursework that may take a number of forms, including:

  • a simple-design-and-make project

  • 2 smaller projects

  • written (or electronic) design portfolio

This unit is 50% of the AS and 25% of the A Level.

Unit 3: Design and Manufacture

Based primarily on Design and Manufacture, it is a 2-hour, externally assessed written exam with 2 sections.

Candidates must answer 3 questions, at least 1 from each section. Includes synoptic assessment.

This unit is 25% of the A Level.

Unit 4: Design and Making Practice

​About 60 hours of internal coursework where candidates submit evidence of a simple, substantial designing and making activity. It includes written (or electronic) design folder and the manufactured outcome.

This unit is 25% of the A Level.
